Chapter Eighteen
Hilda wiped Moira's damp brow with a wet cloth. "You will be fine."
Moira nodded slowly and closed her eyes, resting her head back against the wooden chair.
Hilda ordered the bucket removed from in front of Moira. "This time will pass."
Moira so wanted to believe that the contents of her breakfast would eventually remain in her stomach, but for the last two weeks it had insisted on coming up. "The babe does not favor the morning meal."
Hilda smiled. "Few of them do. It is a normal response when with child though it can be annoying and it does drain the energy from you."
Moira gave another nod, feeling just as Hilda said, drained. It had not taken long for her and Hilda to become friends. After the first evening, when Ian and Blair tasted her and Anne's seasoned dishes and commented most ardently on the delicious taste, Hilda sought her advice.
Hilda then began to readily accept other suggestions Moira made and within the week the kitchen was not only producing more flavorful foods but was operating more efficiently, giving Hilda more free time.
Now the two women met each morning to discuss menus, preparation, and stockāand each morning Moira took ill. Until this morning she had been lucky enough to have only Hilda present and she immediately had seen to tending to her care. All in the keep knew of her condition and she knew that gossip had many thinking her too ill and frail to carry the child, but not so Hilda.
The woman simply kept a bucket nearby and wiped her brow through the ordeal and then cleaned up after her, all the time assuring her that this morning sickness was natural. Unfortunately this morning two servant girls were present and Moira could hear them whispering as Hilda hurried them out of the kitchen. Ian would catch wind of the wagging tongues soon enough and search her out and insist that she rest.
She hated resting, especially as much as he wished her to rest. She liked keeping active, which she had managed to do this past week in spite of her husband's attentive eye.
Feeling much herself again, she and Hilda finished their conversation and decided on a few more changes to the work area. With a hug of gratitude to Hilda she left the kitchen and went in search of Anne. The sewing room was fast being completed and within the next few days she hoped to be able to have all she needed to begin her studies again.
Anne was doing an excellent job of securing the items she required and she had noticed that she and Blair were spending much time together, which probably was the reason for the continuous smile on Anne's pretty face.
She located Anne in the storage room. It was a rather large room that sat off the great hall and held a wealth of furnishings and odd objects. Many of the items in the room had been received through trade or confiscated from other clans after battle.
